Chatra is the headquarter of Chatra District of Jharkhand state, India.
Over the ages, Chatra has been considered a gateway to Jharkhand, particularly to Chota Nagpur Plateau. It is bounded on the north by Gaya and Hazaribagh districts, on the east by Hazaribagh district, on the south by Palamu and Ranchi districts and on the west by Gaya and Palamu districts.
Although Chatra has a long historical past, tracing its history to Magadha period, the modern Chatra came into being in 1991, after carving out a portion from Hazaribagh district, Jharkhand state, India. Chatra covers an area of 3706 square kilometers and has a population of 790000 (1991 census).
