, "pictures of the floating world", is a genre of Japanese woodblock prints produced between the 17th and the 20th century, featuring motifs of landscapes, the theater and pleasure quarters.
Ukiyo, meaning "floating world", refers to the impetuous young culture that bloomed in the urban centers of Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Osaka, and Kyoto that were a world unto themselves. It is an ironic allusion to the homophone term "Sorrowful World" (憂き世), the earthly plane of death and rebirth from which Buddhists sought release.
The art form rose to great popularity in the metropolitan culture of Edo (Tokyo) during the second half of the 17th century, originating with the single-color works of Hishikawa Moronobu in the 1670s. At first, only India ink was used, then some prints were manually colored with a brush, but in the 18th centurySuzuki Harunobu developed the technique of polychrome printing to produce nishiki-e.
Israel should abide by U.N. Resolution 1701 Tue, 02 Sep 2008 15:10:00 -0500 Claudio Graziano, commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) recently stated that Israel is violating the tenets of U.N. Resolution 1701 by flying over Lebanon, refusing to help remove unexploded cluster bombs fired during the second Lebanon war of July-August of 2006, and failing to withdraw from Lebanon's Al Ghajar village.
By contrast, Graziano said Hezbollah accepted Resolution 1701 and is abiding by it, and stressed that UNIFIL has developed an excellent collaboration with Hezbollah and local Lebanese. Israel, however, has been accused of violating Lebanon's air space on several occasions.

It's deja vu, all over again Tue, 02 Sep 2008 15:11:00 -0500 Here we go again. Less than a year after Shinzo Abe stunned supporters with a sudden resignation from office, Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda has decided to do the same. Fukuda blamed a divided Diet, plummeting approval ratings, and a desire to avoid a political vacuum for his decision to step down. It's an odd move, although one very much in keeping with Fukuda's character. It won't necessarily help Japan or the Liberal Democratic Party and it's likely to intensify the vacuum he blames for his departure.
Fukuda had a rough time as prime minister. He was expected to deliver stability and competence after the fumbles of the Abe administration. Fukuda got the focus right — domestic...

Democracy failing in Thailand Tue, 02 Sep 2008 15:12:00 -0500 Enough already! Thailand's Prime Minister Samak Sundarvej has been virtually under siege since taking office. His political opponents charge that he is a proxy for deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and demand his resignation. Mr. Samak has refused to give in and appears increasingly isolated.
The problem for his opponents is that the prime minister was lawfully elected and it is the demonstrators that show no respect for democracy and the rule of law. Their refusal to accept defeat, or to believe in a government untainted by politics, undermines their arguments and does their country a disservice.

Occupiers favored with postwar plenty Tue, 02 Sep 2008 15:13:00 -0500 Ask any Japanese who experienced the war and the Allied Occupation about their recollections of those years and their first memory will probably concern hunger.
"The rations for Japanese and Foreign Nationals add up to the absolute minimum number of calories to keep alive. It seems to me that it is around 1,800 calories a day, which doesn't permit any flourishes and certainly no sweets," wrote Elizabeth Ryan during her stay in Occupied Japan.
