Japan as a tourist destination
Tue, 14 Oct 2008 15:10:00 -0500
Japan's newly formed Tourism Agency, whose formation was announced Oct. 1, will have a lot of work to do. Even with the variety of appealing and fascinating sites nationwide, establishing a tourist infrastructure is no easy task. Most other countries in Asia have long since built a network for tourism, while Japan seems to have just gotten started. According to the World Tourism Organization, Japan barely ranks on the tourism scale, with a comparatively low 7 million visitors in 2006. That's nearly half of Thailand's and Hong Kong's total and even further behind China's pre-Olympic 33 million annual visitors. It will take a long time before Japan approaches France's highest ranking for... Read the full story
Pirates of starvation putting Somalis at risk
Tue, 14 Oct 2008 15:11:00 -0500
NEW YORK — Time is running out for Somalia. As many as 3 million people — one-third of the country — live under threat of starvation. Their lifeline is the sea, from which food, medical supplies, and other aid arrives. And there lies the problem. Heavily armed bands of modern-day pirates in speedboats are terrorizing ships in Somalia's coastal waters. So far this year they have raided more than 50 vessels, stealing cargo and hijacking ships, from private yachts to oil tankers, and extorting some $100 million a year in ransom. Read the full story
Oil puts Brazil on collision course with future
Tue, 14 Oct 2008 15:12:00 -0500
SAO PAULO — Brazil is poised to take its place among the world's petro-powers. Estimates of its newfound oil reserves place it in eighth place among oil-producing nations, ahead of Nigeria as well as Brazil's rival for influence in Latin America, Venezuela. Such newfound wealth is normally a source of celebration. But Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, perhaps fearing the infamous "resource curse" that has blighted the development of so many countries blessed with mineral wealth, is determined that the new oil wealth not be turned into "nonsense." In 2007, huge oil deposits were discovered off Brazil's coast. Modest estimates put these reserves at around 30 billion barrels.... Read the full story
Off the list and counting
Tue, 14 Oct 2008 15:13:00 -0500
The United States has removed North Korea from its list of state sponsors of terrorism after the North agreed on terms for verifying its nuclear programs. The U.S. made the decision in order to advance the stalled six-party talks on the North's denuclearization. The decision is a concession on the part of the U.S. as the agreement contains worrisome elements. It also poses difficulty for Japan, which had basically conditioned the delisting on resolving the fate of Japanese nationals kidnapped by North Korea in the 1970s and '80s. In June, North Korea declared its nuclear programs in the hope of getting off the list. But the U.S. postponed the delisting after the North refused to agree on... Read the full story

IMF, World Bank urged to aid emerging economies
Tue, 14 Oct 2008 15:15:00 -0500
WASHINGTON (Kyodo) Japan is calling on the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to implement steps to help developing economies affected by the ongoing global financial turmoil and will support such measures.
