Mr. Anwar Ibrahim, former deputy prime minister of Malaysia, has completed his rehabilitation with a stunning by-election win. Mr. Anwar won a landslide victory over his rival despite heavy campaigning by the government, including the prime minister and his deputy. He now promises to forge a coalition to wrest power from the Berisan Nasional, which has governed Malaysia since it won independence. Mr. Anwar has had a remarkable career. He first gained public attention as a Muslim youth leader and went on to become a star in the United Malay National Organization, the biggest of the groups in the ruling coalition. The Democratic Party made history this week when it made Mr. Barack Obama, the junior senator from Illinois, its nominee for the 44th president of the United States. Mr. Obama is the first African-American — his father was Kenyan, his mother a white Kansan — to claim a slot on the ticket of a major American political party. National party conventions are tightly scripted events, designed to highlight the party's appeal, spotlight its stars and climax at the acceptance speech of the candidate. Torrential rain leaves one dead

Torrential rain that hit extensive areas in central and eastern Japan from Thursday through Friday left one woman dead, and three people missing in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture. A man believed to be about 60 years old was also found unconscious Friday morning in an irrigation ditch in Ichinomiya, Aichi Prefecture, near a bicycle he had apparently been riding, police said. Conferees call for unity on nonproliferation

SAITAMA — Ongoing discussions and a more muscular nuclear nonproliferation treaty are vital to achieving progress in disarmament efforts, speakers and participants at a U.N. conference in Saitama agreed Friday. "It is encouraging to know that work is continuing at all levels" on disarmament issues, including within governments and the academic world, Hannelore Hoppe, director and deputy to the high representative for the U.N. disarmament office, said, adding that the effort must continue and be reflected at the 2010 conference to review the NPT. Jobless rate falls but long-term trend still worrying

Japan's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate improved 0.1 percentage point from June to 4.0 percent in July, as the rate of job loss slowed, the government said Friday. The number of jobless totaled 2.56 million, up 220,000 from a year earlier for the fourth straight monthly increase, the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry said in a preliminary report. In June, the number of jobless people increased by 240,000 from a year before. Read the full story
4,000 Aum victims and relatives to receive government benefits

The government will provide benefits to the victims and their relatives of crimes committed by Aum Shinrikyo, including the 1995 sarin nerve gas attack on the Tokyo subway system, officials said Friday. In Friday's Cabinet session, the government of Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda endorsed a plan to put a new law for the measure in force and start payments on Dec. 18, the officials said.
