Copenhagen (IPA: , rhyming with pagan (the way the Danes themselves pronounce the capital's name when saying it in English), or , with a as in spa; Danish IPA: ) is the capital of Denmark and the country's largest city (metropolitan population 1,115,035 (2006)), at present made up of 16 municipalities. It is also the name of the adjacent county. Copenhagen is the seat of the national parliament, the government, and the monarchy.

The contemporary Danish name for the city is a corruption of the original designation for the city, Kjøbmandehavn, "merchants' harbor." The English name for the city is derived from its German name, Kopenhagen. The element Hafnium is named after the city's Latin name, Hafnia.
