Nahariya (Hebrew: נַהֲרִיָּה; Arabic: نهاريّا ) is a city of the North District of Israel. According to the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), at the end of 2004 the city had a total population of 49,300.
It is located on the Mediterranean coast just south of the Lebanese border at Rosh Hanikra. Sderot Ga'aton, the city's main street is divided down the middle by the Ga'aton River and shaded by the thick branches of spreading eucalyptus trees overhead*. The city gets its name from this river (nahar means "river" in Hebrew). The Nahariya Train Station and the Nahariya Central Bus Station are near the intersection of Sderot Ga'aton and the main highway. Sderot Ga'aton continues from the intersection through the heart of Nahariya leading to where the Ga'aton River empties into the Mediterranean Sea. There was formerly an attraction where people could ride on small motorboats near the mouth of the river, but the mouth has since largely dried up.
History
Nahariya was founded by German Jewish immigrants from the fifth aliyah in the 1930s. Construction of homes started in 1933, and the first two families permanently settled in Nahariya on February 10, 1935, which is now considered the official founding date of Nahariya. More on [ Nahariya ]
