The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) (; or Munazzamat al-Tahrir al-Filastiniyyah) is a political and paramilitary organization regarded by Arab nations as the "sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people."

Founded by the Arab League in 1964, its goal was originally the destruction of the State of Israel through armed struggle, and replacing it with an "independent Palestinian state" between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. More recently, the PLO adopted a two-state solution, with Israel and Palestine living side by side, as its goal. A key argument for this aspiration is that Palestinian Arabs are entitled to the right of self-determination and sovereignty in their own land, and are also entitled to the right of return. *

In 1988 the PLO charter was amended to recognise Israel and consign its objectives to the creation of a Palestinian state alongside it. In 1993, PLO chairman Yasser Arafat recognized the State of Israel in an official letter to its prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin. In response to Arafat's letter, Israel recognized the PLO as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. Arafat was the Chairman of the PLO Executive Committee from 1969 until his death in 2004. He was succeeded by Mahmoud Abbas (also known as Abu Mazen).
