Results of Pelham city election upheld in recount
janderson@bhamnews.com Thu, 04 Sep 2008 18:41:51 -0000
Candidates remain same for runoffs for mayor and four council seats A recount held today of the results of the Aug. 26 Pelham city election did not change the outcome certified by the Pelham City Council on Tuesday. No candidate's vote total changed by more than two votes, and those determined on Aug. 26 to be in a runoff are still in a runoff. Ben Burger, the City Council candidate who asked for today's recount, said he has a few lingering concerns, but otherwise he can accept the recount results. Burger, who failed to make the runoff for Council Place 3, called for the recount because some vote totals in the races for council places 2 and 5 did not look right to him. He asked that votes for all races be recounted and paid about $1,200 for the recount.

They join a number of top acts already announced, including Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Kid Rock, Rodney Atkins, the O'Jays and Buckcherry. The newest announcement came during this morning news conference at which Bobby Bostwick, president of the BayFest board, and other organizers thanked sponsors and went over the general outlines of this year's event. As previously announced the ticket price also remains the same: $35 for a three-day pass and $25 for single-day admission, with children 12 and under admitted free if accompanied by ticket-holding adults. RNC blog: Palin has "the base" abuzz
shelly.haskins@htimes.com Thu, 04 Sep 2008 20:11:32 -0000
VP Candidate Sarah Palin is the buzz today across the country, and Alabama Republicans are still tingling from the electrifying speech she gave last night. VP Candidate Sarah Palin is the buzz today across the country, and Alabama Republicans are still tingling from the electrifying speech she gave last night. Before she walked up we held our breath hoping that she wouldn't blow it. But then we had the wind knocked out of us by her firebrand charisma. At breakfast we still had a euphoric hangover. This morning I heard, "This member of the base is energized!" and "What a grand slam Sarah Palin hit last night!" The Alabama Power Company party yesterday afternoon in Bob Riley's honor (sans Bob) at the Minnesota Orchestra Hall offered Minnesota cuisine, like walleye cakes and rhubarb pie, mixed with Southern Rock music, including the inevitable performance of Sweet Home Alabama. Congressmen Aderholt, Bacchus, and Bonner, Senator Shelby, 2010 Gubernatorial Candidate Tim James, and State Legislators joined right in with the rest of the group. After the late roll call vote, some Alabama representatives were kept away from the hotel by the army of riot police facing off against hundreds of Rage Against The Machine concert-goers-turned-activists marching in the downtown Minneapolis street. Luckily Alabama's bus wasn't the one they were trying to flip over. Tonight we finally hear from the newly-nominated John McCain. We'll see if he can excite the crowd as much as his running mate, and are expecting to him to contrast not only with Barack Obama, but also George W. Bush. Jurors deliberating in the fraud trial of State Rep. Sue Schmitz broke for lunch at 12:30 p.m. and will continue working this afternoon. Jurors deliberating three hours yesterday after closing arguments before beginning again this morning. Schmitz, D-Toney, was on trial for eight federal fraud charges, including allegations she arranged for a job and then did little or no work while being paid a total of more than $177,000 from January 2003 to October 2006 as program director for community and external affairs for the Community Intensive Treatment for Youth (CITY) Skills Training Consortium. The program for youths who have been in trouble with the law is administered under Central Alabama Community College and funded by state and federal money. She is the only member of the Legislature who has yet gone on trial in the wake of a federal investigation into corruption in the state's two-year college system. Prosecutors in closing arguments Wednesday called Schmitz "a thief," while her defense lawyers say she didn't commit any crime.
Space shuttle New Orleans plant to reopen
shelby.spires@htimes.com Thu, 04 Sep 2008 16:43:05 -0000
NASA managers plan to reopen the space agency's Michoud Assembly Facility today after shuttering the plant Saturday because of Hurricane Gustav. With 2,000 workers, the New Orleans-based plant is used to build the space shuttle external fuel tank. The hurricane caused no damage to shuttle flight hardware or support equipment, and there were no injuries to the rideout crew that stayed on-site during Hurricane Gustav, according to a NASA release. Michoud has been used by NASA to produce space flight hardware since the Apollo Saturn boosters were built there starting in the early 1960s. The plant is scheduled to transfer from building shuttle tanks to constructing the upper stage of the Ares I rocket over the next four years.
