Alabama Power to seek higher base charge, late fees
(205) 325-2441 Tue, 07 Oct 2008 02:01:25 -0000
MONTGOMERY -- Alabama Power Co. is seeking approval for additional charges, in addition to a rate increase already proposed for higher fuel costs, that combined would have the typical household paying more than $15 more each month. The power giant will propose the increases Tuesday morning to the Pubic Service Commission, Alabama Power spokesman Michael Sznajderman said. "We are experiencing significant increases in our costs across the board, not only in fuel," Alabama Power spokesman Michael Sznajderman said. The power company is seeking to raise the base charge residential customers pay from $8.91 to $15 a month. The base charge is a flat rate for connecting an Alabama Power account. In addition, the company is proposing its first ever late fee of $2 or 1.5 percent of a late bill, whichever is higher. Sznajderman said the increases, first filed with the Public Service Commission, a few weeks ago, could be voted on Tuesday. The PSC is already scheduled to vote on increased fuel charges that Alabama Power has proposed. A typical household that uses 1,000 kilowatt hours monthly would pay $9.30 more each month if the fuel charge increase is approved. Together the fuel charge increase and the base charge increase would mean a typical residential customer would pay more than $15 a month.

MOBILE, Ala. - When Smoothie Shop owner Dean Massey shot Doughboy Pizza shop manager Christopher Charlton on March 22, 2007, he was acting in self-defense, Charlton's attorneys told a Mobile jury today. Massey's trial on a first-degree assault charge began before Circuit Judge Joseph "Rusty" Johnston. But prosecutors said that Charlton, 21, was unarmed, and that Massey's reckless act amounted to assault, and he should be held accountable.Witnesses told jurors that the two men exchanged words earlier in the day and that as a result of insults Massey hurled at Charlton's sister, their father, Terrell Charlton, went into Massey's shop near McGregor and Old Shell roads. When Massey, 37, pointed a gun at Terrell Charlton and forced him to kneel on the floor, the younger Charlton burst into the store. Christopher Charlton looked as though he was charging Massey, one witness said. Other witnesses said Christopher was trying to get between his father and the gun. Then Massey fired, striking the son in the torso.

A Madison County circuit judge denied youthful offender status Friday for a 17-year-old girl who is a suspect in the murder of her adoptive mother. Jacqueline Richardson of Birmingham as arrested on July 27, 2007, and charged with murder in the death of Donna Louise Richardson, 45, of 127 Carillo Lane in Toney. Roy Miller, Jacqueline Richardson's lawyer, asked Circuit Judge Karen Hall on Friday to consider his client's age of 16 at the time of the alleged crime as a mitigating circumstance. The prosecution opposed Richardson's application for youthful offender status because of the severity of the crime.
