Honeydew, CA is a small town of less than 1,000 residents, located 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean on what is known as "The Lost Coast". The town is located in Southern Humboldt County, and is comprised of little more than a general store, elementary school, post office, with a few houses located nearby. Many of the locals live in the hills surrounding the Mattole valley, which is named after the river which runs through it. There are three roads leading to Honeydew: one comes from neighboring Southern Humboldt town of Garberville, CA which follows Wilder Ridge Road (partly unpaved and so not recommended for people with low-bottomed cars), another off the 101 State Highway through the RedwoodForest, and another from Ferndale, CA in the north. The Ferndale route has scenic views of the Pacific Ocean and the neighboring town of Petrolia. All three routes are over twisting mountain roads which can be treacherous in bad weather, especially fog.
Because of its isolated location, Honeydew retains a small town atmosphere. The locals are diverse and unique, visitors can always expect a warm reception. There are no motels in the town, but there are several campgrounds nearby. Anyone at the Honeydew General Store would be happy to give recommendations. It must be noted that during the summer and early fall months the cultivation of outdoor Cannabis (marijuana) fields is common, so some caution is advised when exploring land which is not marked as being under State Park jurisdiction.
