LaPorte is a census-designated place (CDP) in Larimer County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,691 at the 2000 census. The town is located on the Cache La Poudre River northwest of Fort Collins, near the place where the river emerges from the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

History

In the spring of 1844, a twenty-year-old Missouri Frenchman, Antoine Janis, arrived in the area. "On the first of June, 1844, I stuck my claim in the valley, intending the location selected for my home should the country ever be settled. At the time the streams were all very high and the valley black with buffalo. . . . the gold fever of 1858 I moved over from Fort Laramie and settled on it. . . . One hundred and fifty lodges of Arapahoes moved there with me. . . ."

The town, a few miles west of present-day Fort Collins on Colorado 14, was called Colona by Janis and his colleagues. Renamed Laporte in 1862, a name it retains, the town was Larimer County's seat until 1868 when it was eclipsed commercially and politically by Fort Collins. The name means "the door" in French. According to legend, a group of fur traders had earlier stashed supplies (including gunpowder) in a cache along the river near LaPorte, and that is how the river got its name.
