Jacksonville police are investigating the apparent drowning of a child in an apartment complex retention pond. The boy, who was younger than 2 years old, was discovered shortly before 5 p.m. in the pond behind the Woodhollow Apartments in the 1700 block of Hodges Boulevard, said Lt. Larry Schmitt with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Schmitt said the mother was watching the boy and three other children when the toddler slipped away. He said a name has not been released pending positive identification. The boy was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.read more

Emily Wurn, a patron of the arts in Jacksonville, died Wednesday in Daytona Beach while attending a bridge tournament. She tripped on some stairs at her hotel and struck her head on the marble floor, said a daughter, Jeanne Sack. Mrs. Wurn was 92. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. today at the Temple of Congregation Ahavath Chesed at 8727 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, followed by burial in Evergreen Cemetery.read more
