Atlantans can save $9,129 a year by using mass transit, group says Thu, 04 Sep 2008 12:39:44 -0400 The average Atlanta household using mass transit saves $9,129 a year by not driving, according to a transit advocacy group. That's $3,000 more than the average American household spends on food, said a report by the group, the American Public Transportation Association. The savings come even with the recent slight decline in gas prices. "With the price of gas hovering at 89 cents higher than last year, transit users have an increased savings of $411 annually compared to this time last year," according to a statement released by the association. Governments deal with less transportation money Thu, 04 Sep 2008 10:36:35 -0400 With a goal of helping metro areas and states plan for dwindling federal transportation dollars, the Transportation Research Board, a nonprofit research group, is holding a conference in Atlanta through Friday. The sessions at the CNN Center target a wide range of topics for local officials who are planning projects. Estimates vary, but one federal office projected that by mid 2009 the federal Highway Trust Fund won't be able to meet all its obligations for projects, to the tune of at least $3 billion. That's on top of cuts metro Atlanta planners have already made. The Atlanta Regional Commission last year cut $4 billion from the region's long-range transportation plan. Katrina evacuee sentenced to life in prison Thu, 04 Sep 2008 09:34:08 -0400 A Hurricane Katrina evacuee who fled to Georgia from Louisiana has been sentenced to life in prison for a November 2006 killing. A Clarke County Superior Court jury found 39-year-old Rodney Shepard guilty of murdering 22-year-old David Lamarious Lumpkin as he slept in his east Athens home. He was also found guilty of aggravated assault and two counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime. Prosecutors say Shepard and Eric Martin Hassel were hired by another man to kill Lumpkin in revenge for an armed robbery. Soon after, Shepard moved back to his home in Marrero, La., where he was caught by police in February 2007 and extradited back to Georgia.
