Changes could soon be in store for rules governing Georgia teachers. The Georgia Professional Standards Commission is revising its Code of Ethics for Educators, a set of standards for all state-certified school employees. A committee of educators and PSC members is submitting recommendations for the updated ethics code, which is expected to be in place by July 2009. "We want to make sure everyone understands what the expectations are," said Gary Walker, director of the PSC's Educator Ethics Division. "We're all playing by the same rules."
Bible classes in Barrow schools approved by committee

Winder, Ga. — A Barrow County committee of school administrators, teachers and parents has approved a plan to consider steps needed to offer two elective Bible-focused courses. Superintendent Ron Sanders said if the county Board of Education signs off on the recommendation next week, each high school could begin to select a teacher and draft a plan to offer a literature or history class covering either the Old or New Testament as soon as 2009. A 2006 change in state law allows schools to offer the courses.
    Georgia keeps Medicaid, PeachCare intact
    Thu, 28 Aug 2008 18:51:45 -0400
As Georgia's money problems cause public services to be slashed, state health officials announced a plan Thursday to preserve intact two of the most important programs for needy people – Medicaid and PeachCare for Kids – for the next two years. Social service advocates celebrated the news that the state had no plans to cut services or restrict eligibility for the two government insurance programs. "We are blessed that the governor and Commissioner Medows have their priorities in order," said Carolyn Wetzel, a board member with Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia. "They are going to put the kids first." Community Health Commissioner Rhonda Medows said preserving these programs was vitally important since struggling people "need our help the most."
