Area teachers to take weighless flight Mon, 06 Oct 2008 16:23:32 -0400 Tammy Pakulski's fascination with space travel came naturally. Her grandfather is a former NASA engineer who helped build engines for the X-15 rocket plane that first carried American astronauts to the brink of space back in the early 1960s . So the seventh-grade math teacher from J.C. Booth Middle School in Peachtree City didn't hesitate at the opportunity to do the next best thing in a zero-gravity flight that will be comparable to what humans encounter during space travel. She will be among the 60 Atlanta-area math and science teachers participating in Tuesday's Northrop Grumman Weightless Flights of Discovery teacher training program. Court to consider Davis appeal in private Mon, 06 Oct 2008 14:59:52 -0400 The U.S. Supreme Court apparently needs more time to look at an appeal from death-row inmate Troy Anthony Davis, whose claims of innocence have attracted international attention. The high court issued orders Monday addressing the appeals of numerous cases, but none as to whether it will accept or reject Davis' appeal. Instead, the court, in a listing on its docket, said it will meet in a private conference on Friday to consider Davis' appeal. On Sept. 23, the court halted Davis' execution less than two hours before it was to be carried out. The court's nine justices then met in conference on Sept. 29 to decide whether to accept the appeal. Now, they will meet once more to discuss the case.
