Vidalia (pron. VI - dahyl - yah) is a city located primarily in Toombs County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 10,491. It is the largest city in Toombs County. Vidalia's name is said to be a contraction of "via dalia," or "the dahlia way."

$132M jackpot ticket sold in Cobb

Someone who purchased a lottery ticket in Mableton is waking up a millionaire Saturday after winning the Georgia Lottery's Mega Million jackpot, worth an estimated $132 million. The Georgia Lottery Web site reported Saturday that there was one Mega Millions jackpot winning ticket sold for the drawing on Friday. The Web site did not say where in Mableton, which is in Cobb County, the ticket was sold or who had the winning ticket. Lottery officials could not be reached for comment Saturday morning. The winning numbers were 21,25, 26, 50 and 51. The Mega Ball number was 22.
New Orleans evacuation could touch Georgia

Emergency officials in Georgia are preparing for a possible flood of people trying to escape two hurricanes, even as the state is still recovering from local damage caused by a Hurricane Fay's tornadoes and rains. The Georgia Emergency Management Agency said Friday that some residents of New Orleans and other Gulf Coast Communities could seek shelter in Georgia, but there are no plans for government and rescue groups to drive or fly to the Atlanta area before Hurricane Gustav. A mandatory evacuation from New Orleans is expected, possibly on Saturday, and some of those people may make it to Georgia on their own, said GEMA spokesman Buzz Weiss.
Chambliss hits the local airwaves

Those relentless TV ads that tout and trash politicians are back. Republican U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss launched his fall ad campaign this week with the debut of two campaign commercials, the first in a heavy $5.2 million order of ads to air statewide until Election Day on Nov. 4. That includes $2.76 million the candidate ordered to air 1,807 campaign commercials on Atlanta's four major network affiliates.
