Addison Mitchell McConnell, Jr. usually known as Mitch McConnell (born February 20, 1942) is the senior U.S. Senator from Kentucky. A Republican, he is the Majority Whip of that body, making him the second-ranking Republican behind Majority Leader Bill Frist.

Background


Born in Alabama to Irish-American parents and raised in south Louisville, Kentucky, McConnell graduated from the University of Louisville College of Arts and Sciences in 1964, and graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1967. At the University of Louisville, he was student body president, and at the University of Kentucky School of Law, he was elected president of the Student Bar Association.

McConnell is a theological conservative and a member of the Baptist church. He married Elaine Chao, now the Secretary of Labor, in 1993. He has three grown daughters from his first marriage.
