Airmen train future journalists
afnews@afnews.af.mil (Tech. Sgt. Matthew McGovern ) Fri, 06 Nov 2009 20:36:01 -0500
More than 85 students from Rhodes Middle School in San Antonio received a firsthand look at the story telling mission of the Defense Media Activity-San Antonio Nov. 6 here. The tour was geared to spark interest in the Air Force and various media career paths to provide the sixth, seventh and eighth grade children an avenue of possibilities. "If we can get one child to join the Air Force or even steer them toward a career in journalism, it would be worth it," said Master Sgt. Ben Gonzales, the NCO in charge of print news at the Defense Media Activity-San Antonio. more...
Changing how we do business
afnews@afnews.af.mil (Lt. Col. Alexander Koven ) Fri, 06 Nov 2009 18:26:25 -0500
Change has always been a part of the Air Force. You see it every day here with the way Airmen support the fight. The B-1B Lancer, designed to penetrate into enemy territory, is now using a targeting pod and global positioning satellite-aided weapons to conduct close-air support. In previous conflicts, air control squadrons needed to be within line-of-sight of the aircraft being controlled. Now Airmen control the fight from thousands of miles away. For my own platform, engineers designed the Joint Surveillance Target Attack System to detect Warsaw Pact-era tank columns crossing the Fulda Gap in Germany. In today's battlefield, JSTARS is producing actionable information for the counter-insurgency fight while supporting real-time operations through an upgraded communications suite. Our concept of war fighting has transformed. more...

Senior medical officials who successfully slowed the spread of H1N1 flu virus at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., published what they learned in an October article featured in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. (Dr.) Catherine Witkop, a preventive medicine physician from the Academy's 10th Medical Group, told participants in a "DoDLive" bloggers roundtable Nov. 5 that medical officials at the Academy acted quickly to set up a team to look at some of the virus's characteristics. more...
Airmen learn traditions during Kyrgyz Cultural Day
afnews@afnews.af.mil (Staff Sgt. Olufemi Owolabi ) Fri, 06 Nov 2009 17:44:34 -0500
Airmen of the 376th Air Expeditionary Wing got a close look at some of their host nation's customs and traditions during Kyrgyz Cultural Day held here recently. The day focused on familiarizing Airmen with the uniqueness of Kyrgyz heritage. Through practical hands-on experience, Airmen here had the opportunity to learn about Kyrgyz crafts, such as rug making and building a round shepherd tent made of wood and felt, called a yurt. "I was fascinated by how functional the yurt and all Kyrgyz art and crafts are," said Chief Master Sgt. James Dowell, 376th AEW command chief. "Even though it seems like simple material and it all comes from nature, every bit of it has to be handcrafted and picked out very carefully. When they put it together, it comes together really quick. It is fascinating to see something that was designed thousands of years ago still be a functional, useful and very practical item." more...
C-17 aircrew scores touchdown in mission with NFL greats
afnews@afnews.af.mil (Tech. Sgt. Joseph Kapinos) Fri, 06 Nov 2009 16:35:38 -0500
The quarterback was crouched in his uniform, scanning the field from under his helmet for his intended receivers. But this was no stadium; it was a C-17 Globemaster III flying over the harsh and dangerous terrain that is Afghanistan. And there was no football, but rather 18 much-needed bundles of food, water and supplies for troops at a forward operating base. The quarterback, in this case a loadmaster, found his targets. Touchdown! Former Pittsburgh Steelers QB Terry Bradshaw would be proud, and he was. He was there watching the pass and reception on board the C-17. more...
