Materiel (from the French "matériel" for equipment or hardware, related to the word material) is a term used in English to refer to the equipment and supplies in military and commercial supply chain management.

In a military context, materiel relates to the specific needs of an army to complete a specific mission. The term is also often used in a general sense ("men and materiel") to describe the needs of a functioning army.

Materiel in the commercial distribution context comprises the items being moved by the services of or as the products of the business, as distinct from those involved in operating the business itself.

Air Force halts wing reorganization
afnews@afnews.af.mil () Thu, 04 Sep 2008 16:44:00 -0500
Air Force leaders halted plans to perform a global wing restructure which was designed to realign fighter, bomber and rescue airlift maintenance units into flying squadrons. Maintenance and flying squadrons will remain separate and will continue doing business "as they have for the past four or five years," said Lt. Gen. Kevin Sullivan, deputy chief of staff for logistics, installations and mission support here at the Pentagon. "I believe there are two main reasons for this decision," he said. "First, there was senior leader consensus that our maintenance personnel will be better able to maintain and hone their core competencies if they are led by maintenance professionals up through the group level. Second, there was also consensus that its important to reduce the amount of turmoil and change within the Air Force at this time. Not implementing the global wing restructure will help provide that stability we're looking for" more...

In the wake of Hurricane Gustav, residents of Louisiana are slowly heading to their homes and beginning to pick up the pieces left by the storm. Nearly half the state is without power, many people are running out of money and more than 70,000 Louisianans are still living in shelters. Yet, though large and powerful, the hurricane left behind only a minimal loss of life, a fact the U.S. Northern Command's leader said was due to the quick response by state and local officials. The general visited several locations in the state, touring emergency management control centers and talking to people working response issues. more...
