Deer Isle is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2000 census. Notable landmarks in Deer Isle are the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and the town's many art galleries.
History
Deer Isle was originally populated by descendents of a Scots prisoner of war. George Gray was captured at the battle of Dunbar in 1650. He was marched to Durham Cathedral (England), tried for treason (for supporting King Charles I rather than Oliver Cromwell), and shipped in a vessel called the Unity to Massachusetts, where he was sold into slavery. He worked at the Berwick 'Great Works' Saw Mill until he could pay for his freedom.
With very few exceptions, the Grays of Hancock County and nearby areas of Maine stem from George's grandson, Joshua Gray, son of Robert, born at York, Maine in November 1714, and his wife Jennet Elliot. Joshua Gray was the first Scots to settle east of the Penobscot River. What little information is available about Mrs. Gray is in the nature of tradition. According to tradition she was Irish, and it is quite probable that she was one of the Scots-Irish who began coming to this country in large numbers in 1719.
