University of Maryland, Baltimore, (also known as UMB, and occasionally as UMAB due to its former name, University of Maryland at Baltimore) was founded in 1807. It is one of the oldest universities in the United States and comprises some of the oldest professional schools in the nation and world. It is the original campus of the University System of Maryland. Located on 56 acres (230,000 m²) in downtown Baltimore, Maryland, it is now part of the University System of Maryland.
UMB comprises six professional schools:
- Dental School *, first in the world, (founded 1840)
- Graduate School (founded 1917)
- School of Law (founded 1823)
- School of Medicine (founded 1807)
- School of Nursing (founded 1889)
- School of Pharmacy (founded 1841)
- School of Social Work (founded 1961)

University of Maryland Medical System - Created in 1984 when the state-owned University Hospital became a private, not-for-profit organization. It has evolved into a six-hospital system with academic, community and specialty service missions reaching every part of the state and beyond.
