Maryland (IPA: ), is both a Southern and a Mid-Atlantic state located on the East Coast of the United States and is classified by the U.S. Census Bureau as a South-Atlantic state. It is the seventh state admitted to the U.S. and is nicknamed the Old Line State and the Free State. Its history as a border state has led it to exhibit characteristics of both the Northern and Southern regions of the United States.

Storm to bring 4 to 7 inches of rain, 40 mph winds In downtown Annapolis, local businesses piled up sandbags in preparation for Tropical Storm Hanna, expected to bring heavy wind, torrential rain and high water. It is the first such storm to menace the state since Ernesto in 2006. Forecasters warned of winds in excess of 40 mph, with 4 to 7 inches of rain, 3 to 5 feet of storm surge and "battering waves" before Hanna races off to the Northeast Saturday night.
