A Kansas City man who lost a leg as a result of a shootout with police was convicted Wednesday night of assaulting the officers. A Jackson County Circuit Court jury deliberated late into the night before finding Ryan C. Christian guilty of four counts of first-degree assault, one count of second-degree assault and five counts of armed criminal action.

Ike Skelton of Missouri, a senior House Democrat and chairman of the Armed Services Committee, said Wednesday that he intended to oppose his party’s health care reform bill. “At the end of the day, the American people should be able to look at this bill and say that Congress has done a good job,” he said in a statement. “This legislation does not accomplish that goal … it does not represent the right balance for the people I represent and I do not intend to support it.”

Authorities on Wednesday charged Jill Conaghan with driving under the influence and killing an Overland Park woman as she gardened in her front yard. Conaghan, 19, was charged with involuntary manslaughter DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to stay in a traffic lane and driving on a sidewalk area.

A man insisted Wednesday that a cache of items found at a Missouri City residence was not stolen, but he still had a lot of explaining to do to Clay County authorities. The man, whose name was not released, spent about two hours at the residence in the 200 block of Broadway, walking and pointing to items and telling authorities where and how he got them.

The Kansas City School District’s paycheck audit doesn’t begin until today, but at least two cases of errant paychecks have already been uncovered. The discoveries came as staff was figuring out how it would hand-deliver some 3,300 checks this month, said Steve Harris, assistant superintendent of human resources.
