The Young Democrats of America, founded in 1932, is the official youth arm of the Democratic Party of the United States, although it severed official ties with the Democratic National Committee following passage of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 and became an independent 527 group. The group's membership consists of those Democrats under the age of 36, and its political activities tend to concentrate on issues impacting that demographic group. It tends to be somewhat more focused on political activism than the party at large; former Presidential candidate Howard Dean and current U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton, both generally regarded as strong proponents of Democratic ideals, enjoy broad support among its membership.
2005-2007 YDA Leadership
YDA's nine national officers and the chairs of the organization's six constitutency caucuses, including the newly formed Rural Issues Caucus, were elected at the 2005 YDA National Convention in San Francisco, California. In addition, YDA's eight regional directors were elected at regional conferences during the spring and summer of 2005.
