South Carolina is a state in the Southern region of the United States. The Province of South Carolina was one of the 13 colonies that revolted against British rule in the American Revolution. It was the first state to secede from the Union to found the Confederate States of America. The state is named after King Charles I of England, as Carolus is Latin for Charles. As of 2004, the state's population is 4,198,068.

Several ships in the United States Navy have been named USS South Carolina in honor of this state.

An apartment complex manager says the man accused of opening fire at Fort Hood, Texas recently had a religious bumper sticker torn off his car.The manager, John Thompson, says a fellow soldier allegedly keyed Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's car and ripped up the bumper sticker. Thompson says the soldier had been to Iraq and was upset to learn Hasan was Muslim.Thompson, who manages the Killeen, Texas complex where Hasan lives, says the bumper sticker read: "Allah is Love." In Arabic, Allah means God.

A hearing of challenged ballots in Atlantic Beach held Thursday booted one woman out of the winner's circle of Town Council candidates and leaves questions about who will ultimately sit on the council.The two write-in candidates, Windy Price and Carolyn Cole, were named the winners in the election Thursday.After Tuesday's election, incumbent councilwoman Charlene Taylor had the second largest number of votes, but after the commission voted to accept 28 of the 39 challenged ballots, most of which voted for both Price and Cole, Taylor came up short for the votes needed to win one of the two council seats.
Realtors hold high hopes for more sales

President Obama is expected today to sign a bill extending and expanding the first time home buyer tax credit, which local Realtors say will continue to boost sales and help improve the housing market."What I'm hoping is this will be a bridge" to a real estate market that doesn't need a credit to sustain itself, said Steven Neeves, government affairs director of the Coastal Carolinas Association of Realtors.On Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the bill to extend the tax credit through April 30 and add a $6,500 credit for most people who buy a new primary residence. People who have owned a home for at least five consecutive years in the past eight years are eligible for the $6,500 credit, and people who have not owned a home in the past three years are considered first-time buyers. Individuals must earn less than $125,000 to qualify, and couples must earn less than $225,000.
