Red Cross shelters closed this morning in Horry, Georgetown and Williamsburg counties after housing 276 people Friday night. Nearly all the power had been restored by early today. In Horry County, beach erosion had been reported along Shore Drive and significant rainfall recorded inland such as 5 inches in Aynor, said Lisa Bourcier, Horry County's spokeswoman. The tidal surge was 2 to 3 feet above normal and winds gusted up to 50 mph during Hanna's pass along the Grand Strand, she said.

As the Carolinas hunkered down for Tropical Storm Hanna, concerns grew over the other two named storms churning across the Atlantic. The bigger worry was the ferocious-looking Hurricane Ike, which weakened to a Category 3 storm early Friday as it headed toward the Bahamas and Florida. And with power outages and problems from Hurricane Gustav lingering in Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and relief groups found themselves juggling three storms."You've got to make a snap judgment just before the play of where you're going to stay," said FEMA's head of disaster operations, Glenn Cannon.
