Weather is an all-encompassing term used to describe all of the many and varied phenomena that can occur in the atmosphere of a planet. The term is normally taken to mean the activity of these phenomena over short periods of time, usually no more than a few days in length. Average atmospheric conditions over significantly longer periods are known as climate. Usage of the two terms often overlaps and the concepts are obviously very closely related.

Small sensors and wooden flumes are hidden among the trees and natural streams of a forest to record the flow of the dark creek water through the pristine watershed.The information gathered from the equipment sprinkled in the 3,000-acre portion of Arcadia Plantation, west of DeBordieu Plantation, that's zoned to become a large-scale housing development will help builders know the best way to attain natural drainage, said Dan Hitchcock, assistant professor at Clemson University.The study, which began this summer, is important for coastal plains in high-growth communities, where water flow and drainage are critical to prevent flooding and ensure water quality. The information can be used by builders elsewhere who want to mimic the natural flood plains and stream flow found on the property, Hitchcock said.
Jailer, officer charged after stolen bike parts turn up

Police have charged three men, including a Georgetown County Detention Center jailer and an Andrews police officer, in connection with what officers called an illegal chop-shop garage.Georgetown Sheriff's deputies arrested the three after finding pieces of stolen motorcycles and license plates that had been put together in the Andrews garage.It was unclear Thursday where the motorcycles, parts and license tags found in the business came from, according to Neil Johnson, spokesman for the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office.

This year's fall motorcycle rally cost Myrtle Beach police an estimated $37,125 in overtime, according to new statistics that do little else to illuminate the most recent event in the ongoing motorcycle controversy.During the rally, a frequent refrain from motorcyclists was that they were staying out of the city limits of Myrtle Beach, where 15 new laws aimed at curbing rallies were recently passed. Organizers and city officials both said attendance appeared down this year.Even so, police statistics released Thursday, showed about the same number of collisions this year as in the previous two and a high number of calls for service.
