Education formally is a social science that encompasses teaching and learning specific knowledge, beliefs, and skills. Good teachers in a given field use a variety of methods and materials in order to impart a knowledge of a curriculum to the students. Informally, teaching is the process of learning how things work including numbers, reading and language that are taught by parents and other members of the student's culture. There has been a plethora of journals, magazines, books, and digests in the field of education that addresses these areas. Such literature addresses the teaching practices, with subjects that include lectures, game playing, testing, scheduling, record keeping, bullying, seating arrangements, interests, motivation, and computer access. However, the most important factors in any teacher's effectiveness is the interaction with students and the knowledge and personality of the teacher. The best teachers are able to translate knowledge of a subject, good judgment, experience, and wisdom into a significant knowledge of a subject that is understood and retained by the student. It is their ability to understand a subject well enough they can convey its essence to a new generation of students that is needed by all teachers. The goal is to establish a foundation of knowledge base that allows the student to build on as they are exposed to different life experiences. The passing of knowledge from generation to generation (see socialisation) allows the student to grow into a useful member of society.

Overview

It is widely accepted that the process of education begins at birth and continues throughout life. Some believe that education begins even earlier than this, as evidenced by some parents' playing music or reading to the baby in the hope it will influence the child's development.

Strategy for project may have illegally saved millions
Mon, 23 Feb 2009 19:17:00 -0500
Gary Springer said a plan originated by County Mayor Robert Stone saved Dickson County millions of dollars. But that strategy, which was used to build the nearly complete Sheriff's Office administration building, and Springer's qualifications have now drawn the eyes of state investigators. Questions have arisen on whether Springer had the proper licensure for the project. The project was halted by the county while the state investigates his qualifications and whether the project was managed according to state law. County Attorney Tim Potter said he did not know why the questions of licensure came up now, so late in the process. He said a complaint had been filed with the State of Tennessee's Contractors Licensing Board, which led to the investigation. Online state records show that Springer has a limited electrician's license, but not a general contractor's. For larger projects, a general contractor's license is often required, except for counties, who may use a salaried employee for the work. However, Springer is not a salaried employee of the county. He is paid by commission, and is conducting work on behalf of the county, but not through any department. He said the county is acting as the contracting agency, and he is the project manager. When interviewed by The Herald on Friday, Springer said unfortunate errors had been made, but was quick to point out how much money was saved by his process. Springer said he was able to cut the building's costs in half, and could save the county millions more on future capital projects. The strategy he used, which he said originated with Mayor Robert Stone, circumvented what he called the "middlemen" in retail by going straight to the supplier for materials. "We're using an entirely different concept for this building," he said. "This is a prototype that will teach commissioners how we can do things that could save taxpayers millions of dollars."
