On a recent Wednesday morning, Jeanne Barnes asked her Mooreland Heights Elementary third graders to pick a word with the vowel "u." Bahati Justin's hand shot up with those of a dozen other pupils. Barnes pointed to him and he gave her the word "luck" - the Swahili translation of his name. Bahati is from the Central African nation of Burundi, and he spoke Swahili and his native Kirundi far more than English a year ago, when he was among five refugee students placed at the South Knoxville school.
